Our Story

A history of the The Seaward in Rockport Massachusetts

In 1945, following the end of World War II, Roger and Anne Cameron purchased a large home (in those days, considered a cottage) in Rockport, Massachusetts overlooking the majestic Atlantic Ocean. They originally lived in the cellar, later moving into small family quarters while renting rooms to summer guests. Over the years, with hard work and determination, their “home” grew into a premier country Inn offering 36 impeccably kept and designed units as well as 2-3 meals a day.

It was, therefore, with very mixed emotion I wrote to tell you Seaward Inn, as we have known it, was sold on December 9th, 2013. The new owners plan to renovate the main building back to its original purpose, a single family home.

Some of you will remember the bingo and swap parties, artist demonstrations, dad’s jazz stick, my mother’s wonderful meals (culminating in Pierre Tells All – The Cook’s Book), the Assorted Artists of Seaward Inn, the swimming pond, Rogers Sanctuary and the, ever sought after, clothes pins. After my parents passing, my sisters and I tried to carry on their legacy but, in 2003, the expanding circle began to diminish. We sold off much of the property and I took over operation of “the heart” (the main inn, Gull’s Nest and what we now know as Gully Point Condominium Association created in 2007).

Seaward Inn had continued to be home away from home for numerous artists, writers and Hollywood celebrities, including the cast of “The Perfect Storm”. Actually, a number of high profile guests have enjoyed the Seaward Inn. Some include: Sebastian Junger, George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Diane Lane, Wolfgang Peterson, John Rielly, Steven Spielberg, Kate Capshaw, Gloria Stuart, Blythe Danner, Tom Selleck, Barbara Streisand, James Brolin, Buzz Aldrin, Ellen DeGeneres, Judge Judy, Upton Sinclair and Whoopie Goldberg. Although fun to mention, the most important guests were the ones who came back year after year ultimately becoming friends. Some of our repeat customers have spanned generations.

It’s been this legacy and your love of the Inn that has kept the it going these last 10 years (2003 – 2013). Although sad to sell “the heart” of Seaward Inn (my childhood home), it is time for a new beginning as The Seaward, Rockport.

For the last 10 years we have welcomed guests to “The Seaward”, a variation of the former Inn, offering charming seaside vacation rentals. Our Rockport property consisted of a variety of accommodations including Gap Cove, Spruce Cottage, Gully Point, Loblolly Cove, and Lover’s Cove.

Now, in 2023 another transformation has transpired… Gap Cove, Gully Point, Loblolly Cove, and Lover’s Cove have been rented annually. The favorite of so many of my guests, Spruce Cottage, will continue to be a vacation home, weekly rental, and beloved cozy cottage at The Seaward.

Drop a pebble in the water:
Just a splash, and it is gone;
But there’s half-a-hundred ripples
circling on and on and on,
Spreading, spreading from the center
flowing out to the sea.
And there is no way of telling
where the end is going to be.
By James W. Foley

Warmly,
Nancy Cameron-Gilsey & family
